Our School
Welcome to the CBJS website. We hope you enjoy looking at it. Our aim is to provide information about the school, showcase children's work and to develop links and activities for learning at home and at school. The website reflects our commitment to our children’s education, their personal development and to a rich and vibrant curriculum.
We aim to create a school where all individuals, both children and staff feel valued. We are always looking for opportunities to celebrate success. The website has become another window through which we can share the school’s achievements.
Our values are central to the life of the school and were developed in consultation with everybody in the school community. Respect, honesty, caring, politeness, trust and determination are examples of these values and together they help to give all our children a sense of stability and belonging. Last year we initiated a consultation to make these values sinpler and easier to remember and during the school year starting in 2011 we will be re-launching our new values. We will be making sure that behaviour is linked closely to these values.
The school has an excellent reputation for achievement in sport, drama, music and the arts. Regular concerts and productions give the children opportunities to shine and parents and friends of the school the opportunity to enjoy these performances. Sports teams do well in local competitions. We achieved Active mark for the school's commitment to high quality PE and sport. We have also achieved Artsmark Gold.
Parents are important partners with the staff of the school in developing children’s learning and we are always looking to further develop this partnership. The evolving contribution of our parent consultation group and our exciting and innovative work on listening to our pupil voice has taken the school to a new level. The important views of parents and children have helped us to achieve recognition as a healthy school and a survey used towards the end of the last school year in July has given us information to further help us support children with issues that they find difficult. In September 2011 we will be replacing our PTA with a new 'Friends of CBJS Association so that we can continue to provide regular events for children and families. Inspire workshops, parents' evenings and workshops about the curriculum keep parents informed and knowledgeable about the school. We are very keen both to support community activities and to provide opportunities for parents and the community to be more involved in the school.
We have an excellent staff team of both teaching and support staff. The first point of contact is often the school office. Visitors and parents are assured of a warm welcome from a friendly and knowledgeable team. All our teachers are well qualified with continuing professional development to keep them up-to-date with the needs of the children. They go out of their way to support the children’s academic and personal development and will spend time talking to parents about any concerns. Teachers are supported by effective and committed teams of assistants and supervisors and from September 2011 3 new play leaders to support lunchtime play Our site manager and team work very hard to ensure the school is safe and clean at all times.
We have a superb building and outdoor play area for children which have all been updated and modernised in recent times. We have excellent ICT facilities including the regular use of laptops in all teaching areas. Over the summer holiday a new pond has been built on the field, a new facility has been developed in the school courtyard for playtime and class use and we have also built a new cloakroom for Year 5 children opposite their classrooms. The remainder of that area that used to be an environmental area is being turned into vegetable plot allotments for each year group.
Our governors know the school well, give generously of their time and are involved in helping and guiding the vision for the school’s future. Further information about their contribution to the school can be found on their governor pages.
Most of all the children help to make our school a special place. The majority come from our linked infant school where they make an excellent start to their formal education. We build on that through the junior school years and when they leave us to go to secondary school they are ready to face the future with confidence.
Last year in 2010/2011 we had a particularly successful year. Successes included:
* Active mark for achievements in school sport and PE
* Arts mark gold for creative arts
* The award of Green Flag status for the school's commitment to environmental issues.
* Committed to ICT award

* Further development of links with Huizhong Beili Primary School, in Beijing, China and with the Muhammaden Lower Basic School in the Gambia. We have further plans to extend those links and to develop a new link with a school in France. We also plan to extend our teaching of French which is our school's modern foreign language.
