Curriculum Overview

We cover all aspects of the National Curriculum:

CORE SUBJECTS English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education and Information Communication Technology (ICT).
FOUNDATION SUBJECTS History, Geography, Music, Art, PE, Personal, Social, Health Education, Design and Technology

Our last OFSTED report praised standards and improvements in all curriculum areas:

‘The curriculum is broad, balanced, relevant and is planned well for continuity and progression. The policies and schemes of work are detailed with many of them incorporating opportunities for linking subjects. Statutory requirements for the National Curriculum and the Code of Practice for children with special needs are fully met’.

At CBJS the core subjects are taught as individual subjects. We deliver a literacy and numeracy lesson every day and RE is taught for one lesson per week.

History and Geography units are organised into topics which are cross-curricular. Termly newsletters are sent out by each year group informing parents of each term’s units of work.

Each week children have lessons in Science, Music, Art and ICT. We continue to add to our computer equipment. Each class has weekly access to the computer suite and each classroom now has a computer linked to the network. In addition children also have an indoor PE lesson and an outdoor games lesson each week. Children in Year 3 start a swimming programme in the Summer Term and continue for two terms into Year 4. We actively encourage all children to take part in all aspects of PE to the best of their ability.

We also devote curriculum time to Personal, Social and Health Education as we believe children need the opportunity to learn about themselves, their friends and family and the world in which they live. Time is set aside to discuss issues and problems that may arise.

Each week 23.5 hours are spent on teaching; this does not include the statutory act of daily worship, registration, lunch or play times.

CURRICULUM AIMS
The Governing Body has adopted the Curriculum Policy Statement of Solihull LEA which is considered to be a valuable framework with which the school is able to develop appropriate schemes of work and practices. The school works closely with Local Authority inspectors and advisory teachers to review and develop the curriculum. If parents request a copy of this statement it can be provided.

ASSEMBLY AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Each day the school gathers for a collective act of worship. The assembly may be led by a teacher, a group of children or visitors. If any parent wishes to withdraw their child from the act of worship or Religious Education then this should be discussed with the Headteacher. The Religious Education curriculum is based on a course designed by the local authority. Stories from the Bible are related and aspects of other faiths are also discussed so that children have a better understanding and appreciation of the world in which they live.
