Welcome to Year 3’s curriculum page. We hope you find the information below useful. This page gives you an overview of your child’s learning journey through year 3.
Maths
Throughout the Autumn Term, the children learn about number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. The children consolidate their knowledge and recall of the 2-, 5- and 10-times tables and start to learn the 3-, 4- and 8-times tables.
English
Writing – In Autumn 1, as part of the transition process, Year 3 children look at the book called ‘Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears,’ written by Emily Gavell. They then create their own class book about starting a new school. Next, the children read ‘Leon and the Place Between,’ by Angela McAllister and Grahame Baker-Smith which supports them writing instructions for a magic trick and a diary entry.
In Autumn 2, year 3 explore the poem ‘The Magic Box,’ by Kit Wright and create their own magical poem. Later they look at the book ‘The Secret Garden,’ written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The children will be learning how to write a descriptive setting and introduced to writing speech.
Reading – To start the year, some children follow a phonics programme continuing their learning from year 2. Other children embark on a 10-week reading project learning how to read, using the punctation and developing intonation and expression. This is achieved through lots of different short texts that get increasingly more challenging.
Science
Our first Science unit of Year 3 is animals and humans. The children learn about the function of different types of skeletons and how muscles work. They also look at healthy balanced diets alongside the different types of animal diets-herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.
Art
In Art, the children investigate the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser through painting with different techniques and colour mixing.
Design Technology
In D.T, Year 3 children explore gift boxes and design and create their own. The box is designed for another child in their class to receive on their birthday.
Geography
Our first Geography unit is all about the United Kingdom! During the unit, they learn about the different countries of the U.K., what the compass points are and how to read a map using grid references. In addition, they explore the West Midlands through its human and physical features.
Music
In Year 3, the children start the year by composing a short melody to accompany an animated story whilst learning lots of musical vocabulary. In Autumn 2, they have the task of performing the Christmas play so their music lessons are focused on learning and performing songs for you to come and watch!
French
In French, the children are introduced to greetings and simple phrases which are developed into speaking and writing short conversations.
Personal Social and Health Education
Our first PSHE unit of the year is ‘Being Me in My World’. Throughout this unit of work, the children learn about rules and responsibilities which develops into a class charter that they all agree to and sign. They also set personal goals for the year.
In Autumn 2, we move onto ‘Celebrating Differences’, which allows the children to learn how all families are different. They then explore different types of bullying, how to recognise it and what they should do if they suspect they or someone else is being bullied.
Religious Education
Throughout the Autumn Term, the children learn about Humanism and Sikhism. Whilst learning about Humanism, they explore the idea of worldviews that everyone has a view through their own upbringing and life experiences.
Computing
In computing, Year 3 children learn how to stay safe online, specifically focusing on; ‘Self-Image and Identity’ and ‘Online Relationships.’ They will also learn about coding through animated characters using a programme called Scratch. Scratch is available free online for any children that wanted to continue their learning at home.
Physical Education
Our indoor PE units this term focus on gymnastics and agility skills through footwork and balance. Our outdoor units have been Orienteering (which has been great fun) and learning the different skills needed to play Netball.
