Maths at CBJS
At CBJS, we are dedicated to teaching high quality Maths that develops and stimulates curiosity and interest for our learners. As part of our Maths curriculum, calculation is taught, revised and practised as our children move through our key stage. We strive to equip children with the necessary skills that will allow them to become mathematically fluent, thus allowing them to reason and solve more complex problems involving number, measurement, geometry and statistics. These skills are transferrable to everyday situations where maths can be applied to real and unfamiliar situations within and beyond the classroom. The use of smaller mathematical steps, concrete resources and visual representations is also an integral part of our teaching and is used to foster a high standard of achievement for all abilities.
Our mathematics teaching aims to ensure that all pupils:
· become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
· reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, suggesting relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
· can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Times Tables in Maths
Secure knowledge of times tables is important for all children, as something that is used throughout everyday life. Developing fluency in this helps children to build confidence, accuracy and speed, allowing them to focus on deeper mathematical thinking as they progress through school.
At CBJS, we please a strong emphasis on times table knowledge through a range of structured approaches. Children use Times Table Rock Stars questions three times a week to support retention, improve recall speed and make practice engaging, competitive and enjoyable.
Times tables are also taught explicitly through specific units of lessons, where children learn, practice and apply different times tables in a variety of contexts. This ensures a secure understanding, as well as aiding their memorisation of times table facts.
To support and celebrate the progress children are making with times tables, certificates are handed out during our Celebration Assemblies to the children who have made the most efforts on the online platform, during that week. Allowing your child time at home to complete Times Table Rockstars will support them in not only being recognised for their independent efforts, but will also support them with their own retention and knowledge.
