What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education which also includes the promotion of fundamental British Values. This is can be seen through our curriculum and also through our every day work at CBJS. At CBJS, SMSC is:

Spiritual education

Children have the opportunity to:

Explore their own and others beliefs and experiences,
Respect faiths, feelings and values,
Enjoy learning about themselves, others and the surrounding world,
Use imagination and creativity,
Have reflection time.

Moral education

Children have the opportunity to:

Recognise right and wrong,
Respect the law,
Understand consequences,
Investigate moral and ethical issues,
Offer reasoned views.

Social education

Children have the opportunity to:

Investigate and moral issues,
Appreciate different viewpoints,
Participate, volunteer and cooperate,
Resolve conflict,
Engage with the fundamental values of British democracy.

Cultural education

Children have the opportunity to:

Appreciate cultural influences,
Appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system,
Participate in culture opportunities
Understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity

SMSC is a strong focus at CBJS. It runs through out curriculum, assemblies, policies, children’s work and behaviour and displays. The pictures above show how SMSC is promoted at CBJS.

Social and Moral education

Our rewards system reinforces moral and social education.

We develop our children socially in a variety of different ways. In our classrooms we have bubble time and also ‘how are you feeling?’ displays so that children can talk to an adult if they need to.

We also celebrate their hard work in assemblies and through our displays.

We develop our children as moral citizens. Year 6 have currently been learning about conflict, in particular World War Two. They have considered the moral impact of the war. As part of this, they have produced some creative writing and art work based on feelings.

Cultural education

We ensure that our children have experiences from a range of cultures. This is done through our school visits, assemblies but also our curriculum work. These are some examples of children's work based on the different cultures and countries that children have studied.

Spiritual education

We ensure that our children have spiritual experiences. This is done through our school visits, assemblies but also our curriculum work. These are some examples of children's RE work where they have studied a range of religions and asked to reflect upon them.
